DESCRIPTION: The Fountain Street Bridge in Cambridge, Ontario, was a replacement project for the original bridge, built in 1957. It consisted of a superstructure replacement, substructure modification and replacement of 140m, four-span bridge, spanning the Grand River. The bridge had to be carefully dismantled to avoid adversely affecting the river’s ecosystem. The project included:
Traffic control and temporary pedestrian and cyclist platform on existing bridge during staged demolition and replacement.
Demolition of voided box beam superstructure, pier caps and abutments, including special consideration for balanced cantilevered method with slurry protection methods above the Grand River.
Roadway protection in multiple locations.
Supply and installation of new steel girders in stages.
Form, pour, strip and finish new abutments, pier caps, deck, muti-use trail sidewalks and approach slabs.
